As part of a healthy daily routine, CBD can help your dog maintain a happy, active lifestyle, and one of the best ways to give CBD to dogs is with a yummy treat.
Homemade CBD dog treats can be baked, raw, or even frozen for hot summer days. Once you know why homemade CBD treats for dogs are the right choice and how much CBD to use in your treats, you can use our recipes or create your own! With plenty of wholesome ingredients to play with, like sweet potato, CBD peanut butter, berries, bananas, and pumpkin, you can create a CBD snack that your pupper is sure to love.
Why Make Your Own CBD Dog Treats?
Dog treats offer a portable, quick, and easy way to administer CBD to your pet, but not all dog treats are created equal. Some might contain ingredients that are harmful to your best bud.
The ingredient list on a dog treat bag can be surprisingly long, and some feature artificial flavors, fillers, or even chemical preservatives that you should avoid. While you can become an educated consumer and find CBD dog treats with wholesome, healthy ingredients, it’s also rewarding to make your own CBD dog treats at home!
Not only can the process of making treats for your furry friend be a fun cooking activity for the whole family, but you also get complete control over the ingredient list and the strength of the treat. This control can be especially great for families with several pets of different sizes who need different amounts of CBD daily.
How Much CBD to Use in Dog Treats
The amount of CBD oil you use in your homemade dog treats will depend on how strong you want them to be, which will depend on your pet’s appropriate serving size. Consult your veterinarian and the product label to figure out how much CBD oil to use according to your pet’s weight.
While you could make each treat a daily serving size for your pet, you could also reduce the treat’s strength so you can give them more than once a day. Your pet should consume the same amount of CBD every day for the best wellness support.
It can be a very simple equation: the amount of dog treats x strength of dog treat (in mg) = total amount of CBD oil to put into the recipe (in mg). If you want to make 10 dog treats with 5 mg of CBD each, you’ll need to put 50 mg (10x5) of CBD oil in the batter. Consider using a kitchen scale to weigh out the individual treats so you can ensure they are exactly the same size.
Cool your canine on hot summer days with these chilly treats from the fridge or freezer.
- 1.5 cups dog-friendly berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries), mashed or pureed
- 4 tbsp melted coconut oil
- 6 tbsp ground flaxseed
- ½ cup coconut flour
- Dash of cinnamon
- CBD oil for dogs (This recipe would be a great fit for our blueberry-flavored calming CBD oil for dogs. Or use peanut butter flavored regular CBD tincture for a PB&J treat!)
- Desiccated coconut for coating (optional)
Stir all ingredients together and roll into balls. Depending on how much water is in your choice of berries, you might need to add some extra coconut flour or water to get the right consistency for rolling into balls. Roll the balls in the desiccated coconut to coat. Place on a cookie sheet and refrigerate until firm. Store in the fridge for a chilly treat.
Sweet Potato Yogurt Bites
- ½ cup cooked, mashed sweet potato (Pro tip: wrap a sweet potato in a wet paper towel and microwave for 5-6 minutes, depending on size, for a quick cook!)
- ¼ cup plain yogurt
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- CBD oil
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and place in a mold. Freeze for three hours. (Pro tip: You can get a fancy treat mold in fun shapes, like dog bones, or you can just use an ice tray.)
No-Bake (Raw) Treats
These recipes are as simple and quick as it gets – with no need to bake and no need to freeze, you’re just minutes away from tasty homemade CBD dog treats.
No-Bake PB Balls
- ⅔ cup pumpkin puree (Make sure to use plain pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling, which contains way too much sugar for your pooch. You can even make your pumpkin puree by baking a pumpkin in the oven and scooping out the flesh.)
- ½ cup CBD peanut butter
- 2 cups oats
This recipe is great for a blender or food processor if you have one, but the ingredients can also just be stirred together. Combine pumpkin, peanut butter, and 1.5 cups oats, and then roll into balls and coat in the remaining oats. Refrigerate until firm and store in the refrigerator.
If you’d rather use regular peanut butter and add CBD oil for dogs to adapt the strength to your needs, that will work fine!
Raw Pumpkin Turmeric CBD Dog Treats
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1.5 tablespoons each coconut oil, honey, and turmeric powder
- Dash of black pepper (Black pepper increases the bioavailability of turmeric’s powerful compounds.)
- CBD oil for dogs
Stir together the coconut oil, honey, turmeric, pepper, and your chosen amount of CBD oil in a small bowl. Combine this in a larger bowl with the pumpkin and oats. Roll into balls, place on a baking sheet, and refrigerate until firm.
From your oven with love for Fido! Be sure to let baked treats cool before giving them to your pet. They’ll be so excited that they might burn their tongue on a CBD dog treat fresh from the oven.
PB Banana Baked CBD Dog Treats
- 2 mashed ripe bananas (about 1 cup mashed banana)
- ½ cup CBD peanut butter
- 4 cups oat flour or rolled oats ground up in the blender
Combine all ingredients and bake at 325 degrees for about 25 minutes, depending on the treats’ size. Smaller treats will cook more quickly. You want them to be a nice golden brown.
Nut-Free Pumpkin Bacon Bites
- 1 cup whole wheat or all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ cup pumpkin puree
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 egg yolk
- 4 strips cooked bacon, chopped, with grease (cooled)
- CBD for dogs
Mix all ingredients well. Roll out dough to a quarter-inch thickness and cut into shapes using a cutter or the rim of a glass. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, then flip the treats and bake for another 15 or so, depending on the size.
